Despite the growth of Tanzanian music and increased youth participation, there has been minimal involvement of women, with over 80% of musicians being men. Tanzanian music has long experienced a significant gender imbalance due to various challenges faced by women. These challenges encompass cultural factors, lack of funding, absence of motivation, instances of sexual harassment, and a dearth of programs aimed at supporting talented women. For instance, in singeli music, the most popular genre in Tanzania, over 95% of artists are men. This situation has profound implications for our culture, the advancement of the arts, and society as a whole
The goal of this project is to enhance the involvement of gifted women in the artistic realm of Tanzania, primarily through Singeli music. This initiative aims to alleviate the obstacles that numerous talented women encounter, hindering them from realizing their aspirations. Moreover, it will serve as a catalyst, inspiring other women to engage in a diverse range of artistic pursuits. We all acknowledge the significant role women play in shaping society. Therefore, our anticipation is that this project will drive societal development, beginning from the foundational unit of the family. This endeavor seeks to normalize artistic expression, particularly in the realm of music, for women. The project's focus on adept women aged 15-35 hailing from the regions of Dar es Salaam, Morogoro, Mtwara, and Tanga.
